Just had one of my collection drives crash and burn. Thankfully, I have a double redundancy (two back up USB drives) and was able to replace the lost files by first, formatting the original USB drive, then copying the backup to the crashed drive. Everything seems to be in order and working, and there was no loss of files.
Highly recommend removing "sensitive" files from hard drives, transferring them to USB drives, then backing them up. It can save you some headaches down the line.
Rule of thumb, is to never have anything on your hard drive you wouldn't show your mother.
