Can a taped mouth prevent snoring?

Post by BoundJack1995 »

I was innocently browsing TikTok earlier and a video popped up of a guy placing a strip of what seemed to be some kind of clear tape over his mouth. The caption and video text seemed to imply he was promoting this strip as an aid to combat snoring.

At first I thought it was a joke but after reading the comments and then curiously heading to Google it seems that there are in fact people out there who regularly tape their mouths shut before bed. Apparently some people swear by it as a prevention for snoring and some even suggested it made for a better night sleep overall!

I imagine it’s more common to use specialised tapes rather than your classics like duct tape but the whole idea of taping your mouth voluntarily definitely appealed to my TUG-inclined mind. I’ve personally had naps before with my mouth taped (no stuffing - obvious choking hazard) and had no issues, though I always wondered about the safety of sleeping overnight with a taped mouth.

Does anyone have any experience sleeping for long periods with their mouth taped or watched over a tape gagged captive? I love the idea - and as someone who snores it’d be interesting to see if it works.

Side note: I’m both impressed and concerned that the TikTok algorithm knows me well enough to show me a video of a guy essentially taping his mouth unprompted lol

I’ve slept with my girlfriend a couple times while her mouth was taped shut and she’s always fine in the morning but she never snorers to began with so I can’t tell you if tape over the mouth prevents snoring.

This post has got me to reading up on the matter.

I would personally NOT recommend this as a "remedy" for snoring! As a sleep apnea suffer, I can confirm that an open mouth is not necessary in order to snore!

I want to be clear that I do suffer from sleep apnea. Because I am also into TUGs and overnight/long term bondage scenarios, I have slept overnight with a loose fitting panel gag as part of a simple head harness, or with a chin strap, but also connected to my CPAP machine with a nose piece those times. However, be it with the panel gag, or chin strap, I was still able to open my mouth and take in air that way if need be (with the obvious increase in noise from the CPAP as the air pressure changes).

The thing is, while I snore less with the CPAP, or with nose strips, I still do snore briefly on occasion even with the CPAP and panel-gag or chin-strap combo. There is no guarantee that the positive pressure from the CPAP (or simple nose strips) will keep the nostril passages and airways open, and if there is no alternative but for the mouth to let in the air, then the mouth needs to do just that. My CPAP registers multiple incidents overnight where it had to increase the air flow, which means that despite the machine, my breathing did stop, or some airways got at least partially blocked, and I had to open my mouth in my sleep.

My concern with the "porous" mouth tapes I just discovered is that one can still apply them in a way to prevent the mouth from opening. And since the mouth is the "back-up" airway, it could be deadly if that back-up failed.

Basically, if even healthy non-apnea suffers, would never sleep gagged or otherwise be gagged unsupervised, then as a snorer I must be at least just as prudent if not more so.

Just my humble opinion.
