Like I said, I'm not comfortable with the idea that empathy is supposed to be conditional on differences that seem fairly arbitrary to me. If anything, I feel more sorry for someone who's alone in their suffering than someone who's at least surrounded by people who can relate to them.

I still find myself a bit perplexed when I get the "dark" or "dystopian" comments. Not because I don't understand why you guys are seeing the story that way, but more at myself for writing things that way when I continue to see this as overall an escapist fantasy. Makes me wonder...

It was definitely a bold choice to make both characters anonymous. I think it worked well though. Keeps the focus where it's supposed to be, on the helplessness of the captive and the intensity of the interaction.

I'm glad my comment didn't offend. :) To be clear, though, my advice applies to most of your stories, not just this one. Almost all the ones I've read by you would benefit from some more twists and turns to add more tension, conflict, and surprise. That and some more flavor would make them stand out...

Easy fix: Just go scroll to where it says BBCode on that site and use that.

In other cases, you can get the image url by right-clicking and choosing "copy image link" or "copy image url."

Little trivia here: The vocabulary of the sign language used in this chapter is inspired by the toki pona conlang.
