Chapter 107
“That will be 12 bucks.” The taxi driver said.
After giving the man 20 bucks, and telling him to keep the change, I got out and looked at the Sheriff’s building.
“Want me to wait?” The driver asked.
“I have no idea how long I will be.” I said, turning towards the driver.
“Okay, you have our number, call when you need us.”
“Thank you.”
“Good luck.” The driver said before driving away.
The drive from the casino to the Riverside Sheriffs office at Thermal Station, was right next to the Jaqueline Cochran Reginal Airport. It was a large nice-looking one-story building in the usual style for the area. The taxi had dropped me off in front of the main entrance. Inside I walked over to the central desk.
“Can I help you, sir?” A young female police officer asked me.
She had a friendly face and showed a bright smile. Her black hair was cut short. There was something of Mexican features in her face. Her voice was soft, but clear.
“I would like to see Elsa Linnea Lindgren. She was arrested at the Spotlight 29 Casino this morning.”
“Your relationship with the person in question?”
“I am her fiancée.”
Technically I was not, but I figured saying I was a friend was not going to help me, so I embellished our relation a little. Officer Franklin typed something in on her computer. I could see that she was reading something, her eyes moving left and right.
“Your name?”
“Jack Bishop.”
If you have a seat, I’ll check if processing has been completed yet.”
She pointed to a few lounge chairs along the wall.
“Thank you.” I said, walking over to the chairs.
It was quiet in the area. A few officers walked around, and a cleaning lady was running a machine on the floor, keeping it clean. There were some magazines on the table next top the chairs, but I did not feel like reading. I sat down so I could see the front desk. Officer Franklin had gone into the back of the station, I hoped to see if Elsa was done with processing. It took several minutes before she came back. Instead of walking to the desk, she came directly to me. I got up.
“You can see Miss Lindgren now. Please note that your visit will be supervised. We are waiting for the Secret Service to come in, but you will be able to see her until they arrive. Do you carry any weapons?”
As I was dressed in shorts and a t-shirt, there was not much I could hide.
“No, nothing.”
“Okay, I need a copy of your ID.”
I gave her my driving license and she scanned it at the desk, before handing it back and walking me towards a door that led to interview rooms. The room she brought me to was at the end of a small hallway. She opened the door. Elsa looked up and a smile appeared on her face when she saw me. She did not get up.
“Have a seat. Video surveillance is active. Do not cross the yellow line. Do not touch your fiancée. If you want out, nock on the door, or talk to the camera.”
That last sentence caused Elsa to look at me with a surprised face. Officer Franklin left the room, closing the door behind her. There was no way to open the door from the inside.
“How are you?” I asked.
Elsa was sitting with her hands cuffed to a bar on the table. She was dressed in orange coveralls, the ones you always see on TV. Her hair was hanging loose.
“What do you think?” She said, trying to raise her cuffed hands, but the bar on the table did not give her much play.
“What happened?”
“They say I had used counterfeit money to buy chips at the casino. Where would I get counterfeit money from?”
“The only place you got money from is from the Casino’s in Vegas, that time you won the jackpot.”
“I never looked at it, I just stashed it until today.”
Frustrated she shook her cuffed hands.
“Jag är ingen brottsling. Jag borde inte vara här.” She sighed in Swedish.
“What?”
She did not translate.
“Fiancée?” She asked, looking intently at me.
“I figured that might get them to allow me to see you.”
“Oh, so you were not serious?” She said, sounding down.
“You really want to send a note to your mother telling her I proposed while you were in jail?” I asked her.
“Okay, maybe not the best idea.”
“Would you marry me?” I asked.
“We’ll find out when you ask for real. And no, you do not ask me while I am tied up.”
Suddenly the door opened and 2 female’s walked in. Both were dressed in plain clothes, pencil skorts and blouses.
“Elsa Linnea Lindgren?” one of them asked.
It was so weird to hear Elsa’s full name, as we hardly ever used it.
“Yes.” Elsa replied.
“I am officer Delmar, and this is officer Herbers. We are Secret Service.”
Elsa nodded. The two officers looked at me.
“Would you please leave us alone?” Officer Delmar asked me. “Officer Franklin will escort you to the lobby.”
I had not seen officer Franklin waiting behind the two agents.
“Just tell the truth, Elsa.” I said before leaving the interview room.
I was guided to the lobby again, settling in the same chair I had been in before.
“There is a coffee machine on your left if you feel like it, we do have decent coffee. Washrooms are on the left, just past the coffee machine.” She said before she went back to work.
I passed the time drinking coffee, which was indeed pretty good, playing games on my phone, and even reading the magazines on the table. The clock slowly creeped forward. People came and went, and I was mostly ignored. Occasionally somebody would look my way, but that was it. Hours crept by without anything happening. I was determined not to leave until I knew more about what was going on with Elsa. Suddenly I saw agent Delmar and Herbers come out of the door that led to the interview rooms. Instead of coming to me, they turned right and left the building.
“Mr. Bishop?” A male voice called out for me about 20 minutes later.
“Yes?”
“Will you follow me, please.”
We went into the same hallway heading for the same interview room. I noticed Elsa was still there, but things had changed. Elsa was no longer handcuffed. When she saw me, she walked up to me and slung her arms around my neck, kissing me full on the mouth. The kiss lasted a decent time.
“Hmmm, excuse me.” The male voice said.
“Sorry.” Elsa grinned.
“What happened?” I asked Elsa.
“The money I had came from the casino in Vegas, as we already knew. The Secret Service connected with their team in Vegas and reported that the counterfeit money was being used to keep the Casino staff on their toes. It should never have been handed out to me.”
“Wow, that is a relief.” I said, glad to be holding on to Elsa.
“They traced the numbers and found all the counterfeit bills they used. The casino will transfer the winnings, using my credit card this time, as those were real winnings. All charges have been dropped.”
“If you follow me, I will show you were you can change.” The male office who had accompanied me told Elsa. “You can wait here if you don’t mind.”
I nodded. It did not take long before Elsa came back, this time dressed in her shorts and t-shirt, her hair done up in a ponytail. She was carrying a whole bunch of paperwork.
“Can we call you a taxi?” The male officer asked. “Or we can give you a ride in one of our patrol cars.”
“I knew I should have brought your handcuffs.” Elsa said, looking at me with a wide grin on her face.
“Taxi will be fine.” I said, before the situation turned awkward.
“Oh, I can give you a ride.” A female voice said. “I am heading towards the casino.”
It was officer Franklin. She was about the same height as Elsa. I had not really looked at her, but she was actually pretty good looking. That smile I had seen when I walked in was still on her face.
“Okay, I guess.” I said.
Office Franklin guided us to the side entrance of the main lobby, where most of the patrol cars were parked.
“Thank you.” Elsa said.
“No worries. You experienced something that should not have happened, but it did. You can call me Ellen, no need to be formal.”
Elsa and Ellen walked while chatting, next to each other towards one of the last patrol cars in the parking lot. I had no idea what they were talking about, but they seemed to have fun. I only called glimpses of what they said.
“Oh, he did, did he?”
“Yes, and then he left me in there.”
“What?”
“And he did…”
I could not hear the rest. We stopped next to a Dodge Charger in Thermal County Sheriff’s colors. Ellen turned my way.
“Hands behind your back.” She said.
Elsa grinned and indicated to me that I should turn around.
“What?” I asked, slowly turning.
I had a good idea what was about to happen, and I was proven right as I felt handcuffs being locked on my wrists.
“What did I do?” I asked.
“You are arrested for being a male who does not know how to treat a lady.” Ellen told me, double locking the cuffs. “Watch your head.”
I was placed in the backseat of the Charger and Elsa got in from the other side. Her hands were not cuffed, but there was no space in the front due to all the equipment in the police car.
“Behave.” Ellen said, obviously to me.”
Elsa grinned. This was the first time she was in control, and I was tied up. I preferred the other way around, but I had no intention of spoiling their fun by playing hardball. After what Elsa had been through, it would not hurt to give her some good times.
“Where are we going?” I asked.
“That is for us to know and you to find out.” Elsa grinned.
